New models - Foton - Tunland

Sharp pricetag on incoming Foton Tunland ute

Foton utes return Down Under with four-variant Tunland line-up priced from $40K + ORC

11 Aug 2025

AFTER a 14-year hiatus, Foton utes make a re-appearance Down Under via importer Inchcape with a new Tunland one-tonne dual-cab range comprising four mild hybrid-powered variants in two styles.

Order books are now open with deliveries imminent, starting with the Tunland V7-C 4x2 from $39,990 excluding on-road costs with V7-C 4x4 priced from $42,990 + ORC while the 4x4-only V9-L and V9-S are priced from $45,990 + ORC and $49,990 + ORC respectively.

All share a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine rated at 120kW/450Nm with 48V mild-hybrid technology and a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission but there is no word yet on the Chinese market’s 284kW petrol engine nor a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version to rival the Ford Ranger PHEV, BYD Shark 6 and GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV.

Much like the GWM Cannon Alpha (from $51,990 drive-away), the Tunland fits size-wise between Ford’s Ranger and F150, Foton Australia saying its new model is a full-size pick-up that “offers the best of both worlds delivering the strength and space of a larger workhorse while maintaining the practicality and efficiency of a traditional ute”.

Foton Australia says both Tunland variants are tuned for the diverse demands of Australian roads and worksites through a local testing program across tens of thousands of kilometres to ensure it is fit for purpose in real-world conditions.

“Building on the factory’s extensive global development, Foton Australia has undertaken additional testing on local soil – traversing sealed and unsealed roads, steep hill climbs and descents, and tackling sand, dirt and mud – leaving no stone unturned.

“Technology systems and drive modes have been rigorously evaluated to meet the expectations of both commercial users and everyday drivers, ensuring the Tunland delivers confidence, control and durability across diverse terrain.”

In terms of off-road ability, both models have 240mm ground clearance, 28º approach angle and 26º departure angle and are built on a ladder chassis with “commercial DNA”. All three 4x4 variants are equipped with a rear locking differential.

Apart from obvious styling differences – with the V7 bearing a strong resemblance to Ford’s F150 and the V9 more like a Ram 1500 – the former runs a rigid rear axle with leaf springs pointing to a workhorse application while the V9 uses a multi-link with coil spring rear set-up for work and play. Double wishbone front suspension features on all variants.

The two distinct “personalities” are to suit different needs with the V7’s focus on core durability and commercial usability that targets fleets and trades requiring over 1000kg payload.

On the other hand, the V9 features softer riding rear suspension to provide a smoother ride plus higher levels of comfort and technology in return for a lower 995kg payload.

Both V7 and V9 have a tow rating of up to 3500kg braked.

The interiors are pretty much identical, each featuring an “intelligent cockpit,” with a large 14.6-inch centre display to access smartphones and a wide instrument screen behind the steering wheel.

According to Inchcape, the new Tunland is “engineered from the ground up to challenge convention drawing on Foton’s global truck-building expertise to deliver commercial-grade durability, real-world capability with SUV-like comfort”.

To Illustrate the level of standard equipment, the base V7 model’s key features include: 12-3-inch digital instrument cluster, 14.6-inch infotainment screen, extensive collision avoidance features, hill-hold control, hill descent control, auto vehicle hold, electronic parking brake, 360 degree view camera with integrated dash camera, front and rear parking sensors and a suite of ADAS.

Additionally, the base V7 scores daytime running lights, dusk-sensing LED headlights with follow me home, LED tail-lights, highway terrain tyres, single-zone A/C, four speaker audio, 2 x USB-A outlets,  six-way manual driver seat adjustment, driver window auto up/down, spray-in tub liner and voice recognition.

Higher grades build on this entry level spec.

Foton Australia general manager Glen Cooper said the new Tunland “hits the sweet spot, it’s the goldilocks of ute sizing”.

“The all-new Tunland is a fresh and capable new contender in the ute segment, offering commercial-grade space and toughness, combined with the comfort and technology modern drivers expect.

“We’ve backed that up with tens of thousands of kilometres of local testing to help ensure it’s tuned for Australian conditions and built to deliver exactly what drivers need – whether it’s for work, play, or everything in between. We see real potential for the Tunland to shake up the category by delivering greater versatility, space, and refinement in a truly value-packed offering.”

Inchape covers the Tunland with a seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and is available through a “rapidly expanding” national retailer network with further growth planned ahead of first vehicle arrivals.
