New models - BYD - Sealion 6Puzzling price for Sealion 6 Premium Extended RangeBYD Sealion 6 Premium Extended Range to be offered at same price as Premium Standard Range5 Sep 2025 A RANGE-TOPPING Premium Extended Range variant has been added to BYD’s Sealion 6 PHEV Medium segment SUV line-up priced from $52,990 excluding on road costs, interestingly, the same price as the Premium Standard Range variant…
The confusing price structure may adversely impact sales of the Premium Standard Range model as all buyers would naturally opt for the “better” extended range variant.
The newcomer joins existing MY25 Sealion 6 choices that arrived Down Under recently starting with the entry-level Essential at $42,990 then up through the Dynamic Standard Range from $45,990, Dynamic Extended Range from $46,990 and Premium Standard Range from $52,990 all excluding on-road costs.
The Sealion 6 is in one of Australia’s most competitive new car segments against a selection of “electrified” hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully electric models to say nothing of the myriad ICE-powered offerings.
Available now, the latest addition to the Sealion 6 line-up steps up BYD’s already impressive sales achievement with the model that currently rates as the best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV in Australia’s with more than 5500 examples already delivered to customers this year.
Like the lesser equipped Dynamic Extended Range variant, the Premium Extended Range features a 26.6kWh Blade battery, increasing capacity by 45 per cent compared with the 18.3kWh battery of the Premium Standard Range.
BYD says the better battery boosts the vehicle’s EV-only range from approximately 80km to almost 130km (NEDC), depending on driving conditions.
It drives the vehicle using BYD’s DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) hybrid system that is said to provide a combined driving range of approximately 1000km.
The Sealion 6 Premium Extended Range also includes a boost in power to a maximum output of 253kW facilitation a 0-100km/h sprint in 5.5 seconds.
“BYD forged its reputation as a battery maker and has always stayed true to its core principles of innovation and technology,” said BYD Automotive Australia COO Stephen Collins.
“The Sealion 6 Premium Extended Range continues to build on that dedication to innovation, with BYD’s Blade Battery technology constantly being improved, and packing even more of a punch.”
The Chinese manufacturer point out that the average Australian commute is just 30km a day, meaning the Sealion 6 Premium Extended Range can serve as a near-full-time EV for daily driving, while maintaining long-range flexibility for weekends away, eliminating range anxiety.
Fuel efficiency may be a claimed 1.1 litres per 100km under the best-case scenario, but normal driving would obviously consume more.
BYD says the Sealion 6 combines sleek European styling with new comfort and personalisation options with the new Premium Extended Range providing two choices of interior colours and exterior colour choices including Arctic White, Stone Grey, Harbour Grey, and Cosmos Black.
