Mitsubishi ASX driveline details outed

GOVERNMENT documents have revealed turbo-petrol power for Mitsubishi’s long awaited new ASX small SUV.

The engine – shared with the twin-under-the-skin Renault Captur – is a turbocharged 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol unit developing 113kW/270Nm paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission driving the front wheels.

At this time there is no indication that Mitsubishi Motors Australia will offer any of the other driveline options available in the Captur, which include 1.0- and 1.3-litre Nissan-sourced petrol units, a 1.6-litre Nissan-sourced petrol-electric hybrid and related plug-in hybrid, or 1.5-litre K9K-series turbo-diesel.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia has indicated previously that the second-generation ASX will be launched locally before the end of this year (2025), and will be offered in three trim levels: LS, Aspire, and Exceed.

Drawing on Australian government documents – and based on the specification offered in other markets – it is anticipated the 2025 Mitsubishi ASX will feature a choice of 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.4-inch central infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a comprehensive suite of active and passive safety systems.

While it is not yet known how much the new ASX will cost, it is expected the model will face a significant price increase owing to the transportation costs associated with its European origins.

Previously, the Renault Captur was available from $33,000 plus on-road costs whereas the Mitsubishi ASX is available from $24,490 + ORC.

The Mitsubishi ASX is said by Mitsubishi Motors Australia to bring “a sophisticated, stylish and technology-laden vehicle to the Australian market”.

“The new Mitsubishi ASX blends thoroughly modern design and a dynamic driving experience to the next generation of ASX customers,” said Mitsubishi Motors Australia chief executive officer Shaun Westcott.

“We look forward to sharing more details of this intriguing new SUV as we move closer to its market launch in 2025.”

The new ASX will be built by Renault in Valladolid, Spain alongside the Captur, which is also due Down Under towards the end of the year.
