Future models - Chery - hybridsNew Chery PHEVs with 1200km rangePowertrain, battery refinements yield Chery ‘Super Hybrid’ variants for Tiggo 7 and 819 May 2025 ARRIVING within weeks from Chinese manufacturer Chery will be a ‘Super Hybrid' powertrain that is said to deliver a total driving range exceeding 1200km – a number that sets the bar high for would-be electrified competitors in any price range – under the bonnets of its refreshed Tiggo 7 medium SUV and Tiggo 8 large SUV.
Debuted in the J7 SHS from Chery’s upmarket sub-brand Jaecoo, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system – as well as non-plug-in iterations – will make their way into more electrified Chery models Down Under in the near future.
The set-up will initially be available from July in Chery’s Tigo 7 and Tiggo 8, the former currently running a 1.5-turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels and the latter with 2.0-litre turbo-petrol power in front- or all-wheel drive configurations.
Pricing for the current petrol-powered Tiggo 7 starts at $29,990 drive-away with the larger Tiggo 8 starting at $41,990.
The new PHEVs are expected to list above these price points, although the Jaecoo J7 SHS ($47,990 drive-away) commands a relatively modest $5000 premium over the most-expensive petrol J7.
Like that of the Jaecoo, the Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) comprises a fifth-generation 1.5 petrol engine said to deliver 44.5 per cent thermal efficiency paired with a DHT (dedicated hybrid transmission), claimed to achieve 98.5 per cent transmission efficiency for what Chery says is “a driving experience that is both powerful and incredibly smooth”.
Chery pairs the CSH with a high-capacity lithium iron phosphate blade battery rated at 18.3 kWh to offer a claimed pure electric range of more than 90 km and a total driving range claimed to exceed 1200 km. Combined output from the CSH is expected to be in the vicinity of 255kW and 525Nm (the Jaecoo J7 SHS develops 255kW/525Nm).
“For added convenience, the battery supports DC fast charging, allowing users to recharge from 30 per cent to 80 per cent in just 19 minutes – perfect for a quick coffee stop before getting back on the road,” says Chery.
Having kicked off its electrification program in 1999, becoming one of China's first independent automakers to invest in this space, Chery claims to be a pioneer in energy-saving and new-energy vehicle development and supports a “robust” global R&D system.
“The development of CSH reflects Chery’s commitment to combining technological excellence with large-scale deployment, further strengthening its presence in global markets,” says Chery.
Chery has a growing portfolio of new energy products, including many likely candidates for Australian consumption. Like a number of Chinese car-makers, it says it is working toward a vision of becoming a world-leading new energy brand, driven by technology and innovation.
Commenting on the arrival of CSH technology, Chery Australia COO Lucas Harris said: “The launch of our Super Hybrid technology in Australia marks a major milestone in Chery’s new energy journey.
“Australian drivers can now experience the next generation of hybrid performance – where innovation meets real-world practicality.” ![]() Read more23rd of April 2025 ![]() Chery to revive Rely brand as ute contenderChinese report says Chery will launch Rely ute range with multitude of powertrain options16th of April 2025 ![]() Chery on top of hybrid techMore efficient hybrids coming to Chery line-up mid-year; brand commits to 19 future HEVsAll future models![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Motor industry news |
